TRIPLE2 Guide - Buying Advice for Riding Trousers

"Cycling shorts determine whether cycling is a pleasure or a pain. Key factors include padding, material selection, and fit. But which cycling shorts are the right ones? Triple2 sheds light on the matter with the cycling shorts buying guide."

Which cycling shorts are ideal for road cyclists?

For all cyclists who spend more than 30 minutes on the bike, a cycling shorts with padding is part of the basic equipment. This is especially true for all cyclists who enjoy riding a racing bike. Why? Quite simply: cycling shorts for racing bike riders have a special cut, special padding, and unique materials, as well as an optimized fit regarding the sitting position, which makes the racing bike tour comfortable.

In biking shorts, the seat area is often made seamless to minimize wear. The pre-shaped leg section in relation to the torso supports the pedaling motion without the shorts cutting in or pressing at the waist, while leg openings with silicone prints prevent the shorts from slipping and keep arm and leg warmers in place.

"Riding Tights – With Straps or Without?"

In contrast to women's cycling shorts, the question for men's cycling shorts is rather different. Cycling shorts for men usually have straps. The advantage of the straps on cycling shorts is that they always fit well and especially the padding cannot shift during the ride or during wild maneuvers.

In addition, these pants called Bib Tights for men are cut so high at the waist that the kidneys are always well protected. However, disadvantages can arise when using the toilet, as the jersey or jacket must first be removed. This can be inconvenient.

"Nevertheless, we recommend a bib with straps for long bike tours, as they offer higher comfort than short tights. However, the short tights also have their fans. Especially under bike shorts or when using protectors, cycling shorts without straps have an advantage."

What features do cycling shorts need?

The features of your cycling shorts depend, of course, on the area of use. Do you want to go on a longer mountain bike tour, perhaps even aim for a crossing of the Alps? Then you will need many pockets and durable material.

"If your focus is more on road cycling, bib tights made of elastic material and well-cushioned seat pads are crucial for many hours in the saddle."

"If you want to ride your bike to work every day, then maybe an Urban Casual Style with hidden features and reflectors is the best choice. It’s up to you. We help you find suitable cycling shorts."

Which seat pad for cycling shorts?

On long bike tours, a seat pad in cycling shorts is essential. It protects against sore spots on long rides and significantly increases comfort on the saddle. Seat pads in men's cycling shorts, unlike cycling shorts for women, often have a special, anatomically adapted shape combined with a warming wind protection in the direction of travel.

In addition, foams of varying hardness – often in combination with up to four layers – provide high damping properties. Perforated foams promote better ventilation in long-distance seat cushions during cycling tours. A cover made of antibacterial material also ensures optimal hygiene.

Triple2 exclusively uses Italian premium products for its seat cushions and is the first manufacturer to use specially developed seat cushions made from recycled materials! Tip: Since we still hear the question. Please always wear your men's cycling shorts with padding without underwear. Thank you!

Long cycling shorts with wind and weather protection

Long cycling shorts should not be missing from any wardrobe. Unless, of course, you are exclusively a fair-weather cyclist. Why do we say that? Quite simply: There are external conditions such as weather or terrain that make it necessary to forgo short shorts.

This can be, for example, cold temperatures in autumn or spring on the racing bike or gravel bike, where light knee warmers are no longer sufficient. Or a ride with the mountain bike is planned, and wearing long pants in the bike park feels safer, for example.

"You have surely noticed: We swear by merino wool and ocean waste material. That’s why our long bib-tight cycling shorts for autumn are made from a material that consists of insulating merino wool on the inside against the skin and robust nylon on the outside. At the same time, the material is equipped to be water and dirt repellent, so you are optimally protected. This way, we can achieve an optimal weight/insulation ratio."

In our long MTB cycling shorts, we rely on a material made from a bio-polymer derived from castor oil. This is not only exemplary in terms of sustainability, but we have also succeeded in developing the material to be both robust and elastic. The advantage for you: Even with a lot of movement on the bike, the shorts do not constrict, and there is also a water and dirt-repellent impregnation of the cycling shorts
